At Ohio State, your academic options are wide and varied. From undecided majors to pre-professional programs, we'll help you find the right fit.

What to major in when you're not sure

More than 20 percent of students enter Ohio State without an academic major. Rest assured: we're well prepared to help you find your best fit.

You may select one of the programs below as a major until you find a degree program.

International students: Due to visa requirements, you may not declare University Exploration or undecided programs as majors.

University Exploration majors

If you want to sample courses before committing to a major or just have too many interests to narrow it down right now, you're best bet is to start in University Exploration . You'll learn about your options through a well-designed system of assessment and advising, and y ou'll stay on track toward graduation.

When you apply for admission to Ohio State, select either the general Exploration, Undecided major or one of Exploration's six theme areas :

Undecided majors within a college or school

If you know what you're good at and you have a general idea of the field you want to pursue, but haven't decided on a specific major, consider beginning in an undecided program offered by five of Ohio State's colleges and schools.

Honors & Scholars

Join University Honors or one of the theme-based programs of Ohio State Scholars to interact with an accomplished, close-knit community of peers, take part in service and travel opportunities, develop ties with top faculty, and live in designated Honors and Scholars housing.

Morrill Scholarship Program

For those engaged in diversity-based service and leadership, the Morrill Scholarship Program (MSP) offers financial awards and enrichment opportunities – like mentoring, an early arrival program and a learning community – to exceptional students.

Honors, Scholars and MSP programs are competitive. If you wish to be considered, we strongly recommend applying for admission to the university by November 1 .

Learning communities

Live with other students who share your major, career or personal interests. Learning communities are residential programs that contribute to your academic success by providing opportunities to explore a focus area alongside peers, faculty and staff.

STEP

Most Ohio State students are required to live on campus for their first two years, and STEP (Second-Year Transformational Experience Program) is an innovative residential community designed to help participating students get the most out of that sophomore year. The program is centered around faculty-student interaction, and professional and personal development.

From the Academics Team to the Zoology Club, Ohio State students head up hundreds of organizations with a connection to an academic program or national organization. Learn from your upperclass peers as you travel to conferences and attend networking events.
